NFL: Jakob Johnson lucky in misfortune after dismissal – what’s next for the German

Jakob Johnson is back in the NFL. The German fullback has re-signed with the Houston Texans, who dismissed him just this week.

He’s back! Jakob Johnson is back in the NFL.

The 30-year-old has signed a new deal with the Houston Texans. However, Johnson is not on the active roster, but is part of the practice squad.

The AFC South franchise had released the German fullback on Monday. However, Johnson revealed shortly afterwards on the “Football O’Clock” podcast that this had been the Texans’ plan all along.

In a conversation with general manager Nick Caserio, Johnson was told that the franchise planned to re-sign him to the practice squad after his release.

Johnson can also cash in on the practice squad

Johnson previously went through the waiver wire, where the 31 other NFL franchises could have selected him for their team. Since this was not the case, Johnson became a free agent and was able to sign for a spot on the Texans’ practice squad.

There, Johnson is entitled to a weekly salary of between $17,500 and $22,000. However, the Stuttgart native can also be released at any time or, in the best case scenario, called back into the active roster.

The Texans are currently in second place in the AFC South behind the Jacksonville Jaguars with eight wins and five losses and are currently on course for the playoffs. They have recently achieved five wins in a row, including against the Buffalo Bills, Indianapolis Colts, and Kansas City Chiefs.

In Week 15, the franchise will face the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.
