The second year of NFL football in Germany is in the books. The two games in Frankfurt were a complete success.

Both the Miami Dolphins at Kansas City Chiefs and the Indianapolis Colts at New England Patriots were watched by over 50,000 spectators in the completely sold-out Deutsche Bank Park. According to Commissioner Roger Goodell, the NFL could have sold 4.5 million tickets for both games.

There were also countless fans in front of the screens. With 9.6 million viewers, Dolphins at Chiefs was the most-watched International Game in the history of the NFL Network. that the league was “more than satisfied” with the Frankfurt Games 2023.

But there is more to come. The focus is already on the future. The world’s most spectacular league will return to Germany in 2024. But where to? When? And who will play?

How many matches will be played in Germany in 2024?

In contrast to 2023, only one match will be played in Germany next season. The double-header in Frankfurt was made possible by the renovation work in Mexico City, where one match was also originally scheduled to take place – the Azteca Stadium there is being modernized for the 2026 World Cup.

Logically, the pairing for the Munich Game 2024 will also not be known until after the schedule is announced in May. However, at least the official home team could be known very soon: That the Chiefs and Patriots would host the 2023 Frankfurt Games was announced by the NFL back in January as part of the announcement of all International Games.

Which teams are likely?

Five NFL teams have exclusive marketing rights for Germany between 2022 and 2026 – in addition to the Chiefs, Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who have all already played home games in Germany, the Carolina Panthers and (as of this year) the Atlanta Falcons.

It is therefore very likely that one of these two teams will also be playing on German soil soon – perhaps as early as 2024.

What happens after 2024?

NFL games will also be played in Germany after 2024. The current deal includes at least one game per year up to and including 2025. As Munich is due to host in 2024, Frankfurt is likely to be the venue again in 2025. However, this has not yet been confirmed.

And beyond that, Roger Goodell has already given German fans hope: “I believe that there will still be games in Germany after 2025. We will not say goodbye to the markets that have been important for our growth. And Germany has been crucial to our growth,” the NFL Commissioner told the German Press Agency.

Where could more NFL games take place in Germany?

The current deal until 2025 only includes games in Munich and Frankfurt. Goodell can also imagine other venues in the future: “We’ve had interest from other cities in Germany. The first time we came to Germany, we came to Berlin in 1990. That was a friendly game, now we’re talking about games in the regular season. There’s no question that a game like that in Berlin could be successful.”

Düsseldorf is also considered a hot candidate: the NFL set up its new German headquarters there in October.
