The NFL has announced its next game in Germany. The US league will return to Munich in 2026, and Berlin will also host further regular season games.
The next NFL games in Germany will take place at the Allianz Arena in Munich and the Olympic Stadium in Berlin.
This was announced by the city of Munich, Allianz Arena GmbH, and NFL Germany CEO Alexander Steinforth at a joint press conference. According to the announcement, the games in 2026 and 2028 will be held in Munich, with Berlin hosting again in 2027 and 2029.
Steinforth explained the decision to return to Munich on RTL: “We held our first NFL regular season game on German soil in Munich in 2022 and had a great experience. There were images that went around the world. Tom Brady on the field, ‘Country Roads’ in the stands, and we also saw a second great game there last year.”
He continued: “From the outset, we were interested in playing there on a long-term basis and have been in extensive discussions with the city of Munich and FC Bayern Munich. Above all, however, we also wanted to ensure that not only would the game take place there, but that many activities in the area of popular sports, such as flag football, would also be supported by the city. We were able to agree on this together, and in this respect we are very happy to play in Munich again,” emphasized the head of NFL Germany.
NFL games in Germany: Dates and teams still to be announced
It is not yet known which teams will play in the NFL Germany Games, nor are the dates. These details will be announced at a later date. Eleven NFL teams hold marketing rights for Germany: the Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, Kansas City Chiefs, New England Patriots, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Detroit Lions, New York Giants, Pittsburgh Steelers, Seattle Seahawks, Indianapolis Colts, and Green Bay Packers. Eight of these teams have already played games in Germany, with only the Lions, led by German-American star player Amon-Ra St. Brown, the Steelers, and the Packers yet to do so. There is even talk of an NFL game during Munich’s Oktoberfest. “Oktoberfest is, of course, a very exciting date. We have various options on the table and have had good experiences with November in recent years. But ultimately, nothing has been decided yet and we are currently looking at which week it will take place,“ explained Steinforth. Steinforth left open what the future of the NFL in Germany will look like beyond 2029 and beyond Munich and Berlin: ”This time, we have received a lot of inquiries from other cities as well. The first games in Germany have generated a tremendous amount of interest. We are always interested in looking at this, but for now we have defined our schedule for the next few years, with two more games in Berlin and two games in Munich. But we are always open to interest from other cities.”
NFL games in Germany: Munich to host for the third time
This is already the third NFL regular season game that Munich has hosted.
In 2022, the world’s largest football league celebrated its German premiere in the Bavarian capital with a match between the Buccaneers and the Seahawks. Two years later, the Panthers and the Giants played a guest game at the Allianz Arena.
Frankfurt also hosted two NFL games in 2023. The Chiefs faced the Miami Dolphins and the Patriots took on the Colts.
Berlin hosted its first NFL regular season game this year. The Colts defeated the Falcons 31-25 in overtime in November.
