NFL game schedule: TV networks no longer have first dibs on games

Some things will change in the NFL game schedule this year. In addition to, for example, one game on Black Friday or several Thursday games per team, the traditional distribution of AFC and NFC games among broadcasters will also be dropped.

Those who follow the NFL closely will not have missed it: For games in the NFC, the broadcasting U.S. station is usually “FOX”; for games in the AFC, it’s usually “CBS.” This division has almost become a tradition in the United States.

However, this division will come to an end in the coming season. This became known in the context of the announcement of the NFL game schedule.

No more privilege for broadcasters on certain games

The privilege of broadcasters to certain games has ended from 2023. The reason is the new television deal the NFL has signed with domestic media partners.

“All games are free agents, so to speak,” said Mike North, media relations manager for the NFL. “FOX” and “CBS” have always split the broadcast of the games at 1 p.m. and 4:05 p.m. and 4:25 p.m. local time, respectively, between them.

However, there is one caveat: In the playoffs, the NFC continues to be on “FOX” and the AFC continues to be on “CBS” unless the games are owned by prime-time partners “ESPN” or “NBC. “
