NFL: Derek Carr – brother hints at problems with McDaniels

Were differing opinions on calling plays the reason for Derek Carr’s exit from the Las Vegas Raiders? Brother David Carr spoke out after the quarterback’s dismissal.

The Las Vegas Raiders were arguably one of the biggest disappointments of the last NFL season.

Despite bringing in perhaps the best wide receiver in the league in Davante Adams and hiring a new head coach in Josh McDaniels, they only won six games.

Towards the end of the season, the situation became so serious that they decided to make a fresh start and put long-time quarterback Derek Carr on the bench.

On Valentine’s Day, the 31-year-old’s release came after nine years, as his contract would have guaranteed him over $40 million a day later.

Brother David: “Want control too “

David Carr, Derek’s brother and an expert on the “NFL Network”, has now hinted at what may have led to the split.

New head coach Josh McDaniels brought an offensive philosophy that didn’t suit Derek, the No. 1 pick of the 2002 NFL Draft said.

“When you’re an experienced quarterback, experienced guys, they want to have some control at the line of scrimmage. They want to use their superpowers,” the 43-year-old said on “NFL Total Access.”

He said his brother wants to read the defence and decide which play is the right one. That’s not what McDaniels wanted, David Carr elaborated.

No bad blood between Carr and McDaniels

McDaniels, then, was reportedly unwilling to involve his quarterback in the play selection process.

According to Carr, however, there is no bad blood despite the differences in opinion.

“Josh will do his thing, find a quarterback that fits his system and Derek will find a system that fits his style. It’s all going to be fine,” David continued.

While McDaniels, formerly Tom Brady’s offensive coordinator with the New England Patriots, faces uncertain times at the quarterback position, Carr is on the hunt for a new team.

Carr visits teams

On Sunday, he visited the New York Jets, having previously met with the New Orleans Saints.

The quarterback’s list is said to include the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Carolina Panthers
