After Bill Belichick was denied entry into the Hall of Fame, the Hall of Fame issued a threat to the selection committee members.
No one really expected NFL legend Bill Belichick to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in his first eligible year, but that’s not how it turned out.
The rejection of the longtime Patriots head coach, who reportedly did not receive the required number of votes, sparked fierce reactions.
Now the Hall of Fame itself has also issued a statement on the matter. “The Pro Football Hall of Fame understands and respects the passionate reaction of many fans, media representatives, and members of the Hall of Fame itself in light of the published reports on the voting results for the Class of 2026,” it said.
“It is precisely this passion that drives the game forward. The Hall of Fame also respects the members of the selection committee when they adhere to the rules of the selection process. It is an honor to serve as a selection committee member.”
The Belichick case: Hall of Fame issues warning
This is followed by a warning regarding Belichick, who was not selected. “Each year, the Hall of Fame reviews the selection process and the composition of the 50-member selection committee,” according to those responsible.
“If it is determined that one or more members have violated the selection process bylaws, they will face consequences.”
And further: “This could mean that these selection members will no longer be part of the committee in the future. Selecting a new class is the most important task the Hall of Fame has to perform each year, and the integrity of this process must not be questioned.”
The decision not to induct Belichick in the first possible year caused outrage in the NFL world. Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes, J.J. Watt – countless stars voiced their criticism. Even basketball superstar LeBron James expressed his dismay.
