NFL: Berlin clears the way for US league games in the Olympic Stadium

After Munich and Frankfurt, Berlin is another German city that wants to host NFL games. The Senate of the capital is now paving the way for this.

The NFL games in Frankfurt and Munich, where the Carolina Panthers beat the New York Giants 20-17 in overtime just last weekend, have whetted appetites in Berlin too. The capital city also wants to host games of the most profitable league in the world.

According to a report in the tabloid Bild, Berlin’s Sports Senator Iris Spranger said at a press conference: “The Senate has decided today, based on the templates, that the sports metropolis of Berlin will apply in the long term to host NFL games. We would like to see the NFL in the Olympic Stadium, preferably for a very long time.”

According to the SPD politician, a partnership is planned from 2025 to 2029. In the upcoming NFL season, eight games are to be played outside the USA as part of the International Series. Frankfurt would be the regular host of the game in Germany again.

Spranger expects it to be a few weeks before a contract is signed. However, she is considering three games in Berlin over four years.

She also said: “The NFL has an outstanding global TV presence, with broadcasts in around 220 countries. Berlin would also benefit from a tourism and economic perspective. We would also make infrastructural improvements to the Olympic Stadium and other sports facilities.”
