NFL: Aaron Rodgers makes headlines with statement about his future – and he only says one word

Aaron Rodgers is under contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers for one year. After that, he says he wants to call it quits. Or does he? In a podcast, the star quarterback leaves the door open.

Aaron Rodgers knows how to make sports headlines even without a ball in his hand. In the offseason, the four-time NFL MVP waited an agonizingly long time before finally signing a contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

When the time finally came at the end of June, the star quarterback hinted that the one-year contract could be his last in the league. On the “Pat McAfee Show,” Rodgers said it was “pretty certain” that he was facing his last season.

But that is apparently not set in stone. At least Rodgers fueled new speculation about his future on his new teammate Cam Heyward’s podcast “Not Just Football.” Also guesting on the show was D.K. Metcalf, who is likely to become the 41-year-old’s most important target.

When asked what to expect from the Steelers in 2025, the long-time Seattle Seahawks pro said, “I think we’re going to deliver some special things this year. I’m looking forward to that. And who knows, maybe we’ll even do it for longer.”

Metcalf looked over at Rodgers, who was sitting next to him, grinned and added, “Maybe.”

Heyward was also amazed and said to Metcalf: “Wow, you got a ‘maybe’ out of him.”

The receiver couldn’t believe it himself. Heyward reached out to give him a fist bump in thanks. That went too far for Rodgers, who put his hand in between them. But he couldn’t prevent the fist bump. In the end, all three laughed.

Aaron Rodgers: Has he already missed the best time to end his career?

It will probably depend on how the season goes in Pittsburgh whether Rodgers will add a 22nd NFL year. After extremely successful years with the Green Bay Packers, he actually wanted to make it big again with the New York Jets starting in 2023. But his first season with the “Gang Green” ended in the first drive with a torn Achilles tendon, and after a subsequent 5-12 season, Rodgers had to leave prematurely.

It’s understandable that he didn’t want to leave the NFL like that. Nevertheless, doubts have accompanied him ever since about the extent to which the 2010 Super Bowl champion can still build on his former achievements. And with that, the question of whether he may have already missed the best time to end his career.
