NFL: 2025 Supplemental Draft apparently canceled – last pick took place in 2019

The NFL has apparently decided to cancel the 2025 Supplemental Draft. The last player selected via this method was chosen years ago.

The NFL Supplemental Draft will apparently not take place this year. According to “The Athletic,” the franchises have already been informed of the decision.

First held in 1977, the Supplemental Draft gives players who were not eligible for the NFL Draft in April the chance to be accepted into the league.

In recent years, however, no player has made it into the world’s best football league. The last player selected in the Supplemental Draft is the current Arizona Cardinals safety, Jalen Thompson, in 2019.

According to information from “The Spokesman-Review,” the 26-year-old lost his final year of college eligibility in June 2019 after violating NCAA rules. Thompson then registered for the Supplemental Draft.

The Cardinals were willing to part with a fifth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft to sign Thompson. It was a move that paid off. In six seasons, the defensive player has played 72 of 84 possible games, recording a total of 483 tackles, 31 pass breakups and nine interceptions.

Supplemental Draft: Hall of Famer Cris Carter is the biggest name

Thompson’s success story is far from the norm, however. Over the years, only 46 players have been selected in the Supplemental Draft, including just three in the last ten seasons since 2016.

The additional selection process was rarely used by NFL teams in the beginning and has now almost come to a standstill.

However, the biggest success story of the Supplemental Draft is probably Cris Carter, who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame after being declared ineligible to play before his senior year at Ohio State in 1987. After leaving school, he was selected in the fourth round of the 1987 Supplemental Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. He went on to become an eight-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro.

Other notable players from Supplemental Drafts over the years include wide receivers Josh Gordon and Rob Moore, linebacker Brian Bosworth, and quarterbacks Bernie Kosar and Steve Walsh.
