On the 17th game day of the NFL, German-American receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown shines once again for the Detroit Lions. Mark Nzeocha makes his season debut for the San Francisco 49ers, and Jakob Johnson also makes his debut.
Munich – On the penultimate matchday of the Regular Season, four German professionals are once again in action. Kicker Dominik Eberle was not used despite good performances in the previous week.
NFL News summarises the performances of the German NFL professionals in Week 17.
Amon-Ra St. Brown (Detroit Lions)
Week after week, Amon-Ra St. Brown is causing more of a stir. In the 29:51 loss of his Detroit Lions against the Seattle Seahawks, the German-American was the Lions’ outstanding man with 134 total yards, a running touchdown as well as a receiving touchdown.
But that was not enough. St. Brown caught a total of eight balls and is thus the first rookie in NFL history to have at least eight catches in five consecutive games.
The 22-year-old is also the first German to score two touchdowns in a game.
In total, the receiver, who was also used as a running back, was on the field on 53 offensive plays. That corresponds to a share of 84 percent.
Jakob Johnson (New England Patriots)
The New England Patriots picked apart the Jacksonville Jaguars by the skin of their teeth in a 50-10 win. German fullback Jakob Johnson also had a good day, being on the field for 35 percent of all offensive snaps and 37 percent of all special teams snaps.
On one of those special teams plays, an unusual situation arose: with just over two minutes left in the first quarter, Johnson waited for the Jaguars’ kickoff to block the way for the Patriots returner.
But because the kick was a lot too short, the ball suddenly landed in Johnson’s arms. The 27-year-old picked up the ball and ran a good 14 yards with the football in his hands. It was his first kick return in the NFL.
Equanimeous St. Brown (Green Bay Packers)
For the first time since Week 12, Equanimeous St. Brown recorded a catch.
The receiver was thrown to twice in his Green Bay Packers’ 37-10 win over the Minnesota Vikings, catching one ball for 14 yards.
Similarly to Johnson, St. Brown also came up with a kick return in which he ran for 17 yards.
In all, he was on the field for 18 offensive plays. That compares to 48 the previous week against the Cleveland Browns.
Mark Nzeocha (San Francisco 49ers)
In Week 17, German linebacker Mark Nzeocha also made his season debut.
In the game against the Houston Texans, the 31-year-old was called up to the San Francisco 49ers squad on short notice.
Nzeocha was allowed on the field on 17 special teams plays and even recorded two tackles in the process.
