The Munich Game last year was a great success for various reasons. Because in addition to the emotional factors, there are also economic and social factors, as a study by the NFL confirms.
The first NFL game in Germany was historic.
A full Allianz Arena in Munich with a special atmosphere. Country Roads. Tom Brady in one of his last appearances as quarterback, winning with his Tampa Bay Buccaneers against the Seattle Seahawks 21:16.
There were beaming faces, happy fans. And a feeling of having seen something special on November 13, 2022, not only because it was the first game on German soil.
But there are not only the soft, emotional success factors, but also hard ones that go beyond the stadium. Like the economic and social successes the game has provided.
Munich Game brings Munich 70.2 million euros
Because a study prepared by “The Sports Consultancy Group” from the report “2022 NFL Munich Game Impact Assessment” confirms that the game had a total economic impact of 70.2 million euros for the city of Munich, including 32.2 million euros in direct spending.
After all, NFL fans spent an average of €333 per day in Munich during the game weekend, well above the average spend of €225 per day by visitors to Munich.
Worldwide, 8.2 million viewers watched the game. With more than 5.8 million viewers, it was the NFL Network’s most-watched international game in the U.S. (not counting OTA viewers in Tampa and Seattle). In addition, the attendance ensured that a record was set for game-day merchandise sales at Allianz Arena. Sales were the highest ever recorded for an NFL game outside the United States.
Given the history of the International Games, that’s an announcement from fans in Germany, as the series of games in London, Mexico and now Germany has been around since 2005.
“Significant moment for the NFL in Germany “
“The game in Munich was a significant moment for the NFL in Germany that will be remembered by spectators in the stadium and viewers from around the world for many years to come,” said Dr. Alexander Steinforth, GM NFL Germany.
“The economic and social impact of our first regular season game is impressive and underscores the positive contribution the game has had for the city of Munich and beyond, and we look forward to hosting more games in this country in the years to come.”
In the 2023 season, two regular-season games will be played in Germany, with the Kansas City Chiefs and New England Patriots already confirmed as teams. Opponents, dates and locations for those games will be announced later this month.
Also success in flag football
In addition to the economic aspect, there is also the social aspect. In the run-up to the game, the NFL organized a series of events and activities in cooperation with the city of Munich to engage the local community, and an NFL Flag Football school program was also launched nationwide and will continue in 2023.
The first national NFL Flag Football tournament was also held in Munich the week before game day, with more than 300 young athletes from 12 schools in five cities (Dusseldorf, Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich and Hamburg) participating.
