After his dishonorable dismissal from the Las Vegas Raiders, things have been quiet around Jon Gruden. But now he seems to have his sights set on a new job
Jon Gruden has apparently emerged as a hot candidate for the head coaching job at Indiana University. “The Athletic” mentions the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Las Vegas Raiders head coach as a “major wild-card candidate backed by some Indiana University people.”
According to reporter Bruce Feldman, Gruden has the support of some key figures at the high school. In contrast, Jeff Rabjohns of “247Sports” writes that the reports are false and Gruden is not among the candidates.
The ex-NFL coach could succeed the fired Tom Allen in Bloomington, who has to leave the Indiana Hoosiers after a 3-9 season. According to reports, he will receive 15.5 million US dollars in compensation.
The Athletic article also mentions other names such as Ryan Grubb and Tommy Rees as candidates. Grubb is the offensive coordinator of the Washington Huskies, while Rees holds the same position with the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Gruden has not yet commented on the rumor. In addition, the successful NFL coach has never coached college players in his life, which is quite a difference from recruiting high school players.
Gruden rumored to show interest in NFL comeback
His departure from the pro league was inglorious. In the course of NFL investigations surrounding the Washington Commanders, around 650,000 emails are said to have been examined in 2021.
Several emails written by Gruden with racist, sexist and homophobic content were made public, prompting the then head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders to resign.
Despite this, Gruden is said to have repeatedly expressed interest in an NFL comeback. Perhaps the 60-year-old will now take the detour via college football after all
