For the first time in the NFL, a regular-season game will take place on Black Friday. What is the background?
It’s a first in the NFL: For the first time ever, a regular-season game will take place on Black Friday. The New York Jets will host the Miami Dolphins from 9 pm.
The game will be streamed free of charge in the USA by streaming provider “Amazon” – as part of the “Black Friday” deal. This means you don’t have to take out a subscription to watch the game. But why is there an NFL game on the day after Thanksgiving for the first time?
Money plays a major role. As part of its one billion US dollar “Thursday Night Football” package, “Amazon” missed out on broadcasting a game on Thanksgiving.
The games played on this special Thursday are allocated separately in the league’s US television contracts – to “CBS”, “NBC” and “Fox”. “Amazon”, on the other hand, does not get a share of the cake
That’s why those responsible at the streaming provider came up with the idea of showing a game on Black Friday so that they could at least take advantage of THE shopping day of the year.
Amazon pays a lot of money for games on Black Friday
In order to show a game on this day every year, the company has paid the NFL 100 million US dollars – in the hope that the money will be recouped by the many spectators who will be able to watch the game for free.
Incidentally, the last time the NFL played a game on a Friday – and it was not a public holiday – was in December 1986.
