Running back Ezekiel Elliott is looking for a new franchise after being released by the Dallas Cowboys. Interest in the 27-year-old in free agency is said to remain limited as several general managers are said to have doubts about his performance.
Running back Ezekiel Elliott continues to search for a new athletic home after being released by the Dallas Cowboys in March. Interest in the 27-year-old has apparently been very limited so far in Free Agency.
According to Kimberley A. Martin of “ESPN”, several general managers around the league believe that the former star player could still be productive, but has since become significantly less capable.
“The market that Elliott wants may just not be there,” the reporter explained on “NFL Live.” As such, she said it’s unlikely the three-time Pro Bowler will find a home with a new team in the near future.
Tony Pollard outran Ezekiel Elliott
Last season, Elliott was finally outmatched by fellow position player Tony Pollard.
Averaging 3.8 yards per carry for just 876 rushing yards, the 2016 first-round pick set career lows each season and was one of the league’s most inefficient backs, according to NextGen Stats.
In 2019, Elliott had signed a new six-year, $90 million contract ahead of schedule, making him the top earner at his position at the time and actually tying him to the franchise until after the 2026 season.
By releasing the fan favorite, the franchise freed up $10.5 million in cap space for the upcoming season.
Ezekiel Elliott: Cowboys return as most likely option?
Elliott will have to admit to himself that his great days as one of the best running backs in the league are over. Apparently no team sees him as a RB1 anymore and would even begin to pay him like they have in the past.
Owner Jerry Jones, however, has not ruled out a return to the Cowboys after the draft. “The ship hasn’t sailed away yet,” the 80-year-old was quoted as saying on the team’s website, referring to his longtime star player.
Even the signing of Deuce Vaughn in the sixth round of this year’s draft would not have changed that fact. “As far as our interest in Zeke, nothing has changed as a result of what we did today,” Jones said.
