Quarterback Alex Smith suffered a horror injury on the football field, from which he was fortunately able to recover. Now the next shock: his daughter Sloane is suffering from a brain tumour.

It has been a time of suffering unlike any other. Alex Smith suffered a serious injury in November 2018, his leg was almost completely gone. He had to endure 18 operations, his life was at stake in the meantime because of a bacterial infection. He fought his way back and made his comeback in the 2020 season, leading the Washington Commanders – then a football team – to the playoffs. Shortly after, he ended his career.

A year later, however, there was the next shock, with Smith completely powerless: his seven-year-old daughter Sloane was diagnosed with a brain tumour back in 2022. This has now been revealed in a New York Times story about the Smith family.

Smith recalls, “It’s different when it’s your little girl “

In May last year, his wife Elizabeth noticed something was wrong with Sloane. The family called 911. At the hospital, doctors discovered the tumour and called for emergency surgery.

For the first time, and contrary to his own rehab, Alex Smith felt fear, as he recounted. “It’s different when it’s your little girl. You’re helpless and it scares you,” the now 39-year-old said.

The doctors were able to remove the tumour, at least that’s what the family thought – including the patient who was still far too young. However, they were not able to remove all the residue. “We found out last autumn,” the three-time Pro Bowler recalls.

What followed was a ten-hour procedure. But the former San Francisco 49ers, Kansas City Chiefs and now Washington Commanders quarterback has no certainty about his daughter’s health.

Each new investigation for Sloane could bring new findings – but possibly not good ones. “We live from investigation to investigation,” he grudgingly stated.

Smith, however, can draw on his own experience and tries to stay positive. “I’ve spent so much time with hypothetical scenarios of what could be and what I’m facing,” he recalls. “But what does that do you? It doesn’t do you any good. “

Externally, Sloane is on the mend. She is making progress and most recently was sleeping in her own bed again, according to her parents. The family doesn’t want to think about the future and any horror scenarios.

Because, as Papa Smith noted, that just doesn’t do you any good.
