Longtime NFL player Peyton Hillis has to be treated in hospital after saving his two children from drowning earlier, according to media reports.

The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday in Pensacola, Florida.

According to “TMZ”, the 36-year-old was taken to hospital by helicopter and subsequently treated in intensive care. When he got there, he was reportedly unconscious.

Greg Hillis, uncle of the former running back, gave an update via “Facebook” on his nephew’s health.

“He’s still in the ICU and has some issues with his kidneys and lungs, but the doctors say he’s doing better. I just wanted to pre-empt any rumours that might come up. I’m sure he wants everyone to know that he appreciates all the prayers for him,” the post read in part. Hillis’ children, meanwhile, are said to be doing well.

The television station “KNWA” shared more information about the incident with the public, citing information from local fire and rescue services, although the identity of the persons was not disclosed.

According to the information, the fire brigade and the rescue service were called to the beach because a man was in distress in the water. The man was reported to have helped two adults and two children who had already returned to the shore. Two of the adults subsequently had to be taken to hospital.

Hillis was celebrated on social media for his action. For example, the Arkansas Razorbacks, his former college team, spoke of a “heroic action”, and former NFL player Ryan Clark called him a “hero”.
