Bennett calls Packers fans ‘racist’: Murder threats after anthem protest

Martellus Bennett doesn’t have good memories of his time with the Green Bay Packers. He’s attacking the Wisconsin fanbase, claiming the Packers fired him for participating in the protest against racially motivated police violence.

Munich – Martellus Bennett has never had a problem making controversial comments in public. After his scolding of former teammate Jimmy Garoppolo, the former NFL tight end is now following up. “Yes, I call Green Bay fans racist. I’ve seen and heard it myself,” Bennett wrote on Twitter.

Bennett played for the Packers during the 2017 season and, by his own admission, was sent death threats for participating in the anthem protest against racially motivated police violence.

“It got so bad that Doug Collins, the head of security at the time, was afraid something would happen to me while I was on the street in Wisconsin,” Bennett tweeted. He would have received numerous hate messages during that time.

Bennett: Packers dismissal over anthem protest

Bennett also suspects the Packers fired him because of his public protest. Bennett was released by the Packers after seven games – officially because he would have concealed details about a pre-existing medical condition

The 34-year-old wrote: “My dismissal was related to my protest. The team conspired to get rid of me and came up with this bulls**t”. The Packers have yet to comment on the allegations.

In seven games for the Packers, Bennett recorded 24 catches for 233 yards. After being released by Green Bay, the 2008 second-round draft pick returned to the New England Patriots, with whom he had already won Super Bowl LI. He ended his NFL career in March 2018 at the age of 31.
