After his controversial comments about the anthem protest in the NFL, Drew Brees now receives support from an unexpected side. Former NBA superstar Shaquille O’Neal appeals to the New Orleans Saints’ sense of community in a team meeting.

At a more unfortunate time, comments about a possible anthem protest in the upcoming NFL season could not have come at a more unfortunate time.

He would never agree with anyone who did not respect the American flag, Drew Brees declared last week, referring to his two grandfathers who fought in World War II.

What would normally attract widespread approval in the United States brought the New Orleans quarterback into the eye of a huge shitstorm during times of nationwide protests following the death of George Floyd.

Even Saints receiver Michael Thomas, the quarterback’s favourite destination, twittered an emoticon that is obviously struggling with nausea. Brees apologized several times for his remarks and showed solidarity with the protests against racism and police violence.

Whether all reservations between the Saints and Brees players have been overcome remains to be seen, however.

But now 41-year-old Passgeber received prominent support. None other than former NBA superstar Shaquille O’Neal called on the Saints to stick together.

“Me and Kobe had a big thing going on.”
“They will try to break you up. Just like they broke us apart at the Lakers,” said O’Neal as a guest speaker during a virtual team meeting.

“Me and Kobe Bryant had a big deal going, but the media broke our team up,” O’Neal continued, “We could have won five more championships! Stay strong. Don’t let the media break you up! Don’t let the social media tear you apart!”

Also Brees obviously used the meeting to apologize to the team. “Shaq told TNT that the Saints players accepted the apology of their quarterback.
