New York (SID) – In response to a significant increase in corona cases, the US professional football league NFL has tightened its safety measures. “The changes we are making are aimed at addressing the increase in cases and the emergence of the Omicron variant,” the NFL statement said. This week alone, more than 100 players tested positive for the coronavirus.
Effective immediately, all players, coaches and staff will be required to wear mouth-to-nose protection, regardless of their vaccination status, and team meetings will have to be held either outdoors or at a sufficient distance. In addition, players will be prohibited from eating in groups, meals will be takeaway only. External visitors will also be prohibited when travelling.
There is also a change in the protocol for the return of vaccinated players who have tested positive but are asymptomatic. Under the current rules, a vaccinated player who has tested positive must present two negative tests 24 hours apart before being allowed to play again. Under the new protocol, vaccinated players who test negative can return to play more quickly.
The league also said it would “strongly encourage” professionals to get booster shots, but did not issue a rule.
