Mike Vrabel, head coach of the Tennessee Titans, has sent an email to the league demanding more clarification after controversial referee decisions. Most recently, criticism from team officials had grown louder after two unclear “roughing the passer” calls by the referees.
Nashville/Munich – Mike Vrabel, head coach of the Tennessee Titans, is annoyed by unclear referee decisions – and demands clarification from the NFL.
In a response to an official weekly email from the league, which is available to “ESPN” among others, the 47-year-old formulated in a friendly but firm manner that he would like clearer clarification on controversial referee decisions.
Most recently, the NFL has faced criticism from the league’s team officials for a number of controversial refereeing decisions, such as the “roughing the passer” call against Atlanta Falcons pro Grady Jarrett in the game against Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady.
NFL: Titans coach Vrabel calls for clear rule
“I appreciate the time and energy put into these videos, but I suggest that we use every minute of our referee department’s valuable time to train the game officials just as clearly as we became in the offseason,” Vrabel said in his email.
Actually, emails containing umpire decisions are sent routinely, weekly to the league’s coaches and general managers. It is rather rare for an official of a franchise to respond to it.
The Titans head coach may have deliberately wanted to respond to the league’s letter this time to express his displeasure with the unclear referee calls in recent weeks, according to “ESPN. “
NFL: Players and team officials want clarification
Vrabel is far from alone in his desire. Both players and other team officials would like to see better clarification and clarity in the referees’ decisions on the field.
After various unclear and sometimes obviously wrong decisions on the part of the match officials, team officials from various franchises have recently been calling for more consistency in the judgements of the referees on the field.
The topic is to be discussed at the next team owners’ meeting in New York, among others.
NFL: Video evidence and replay demanded for penalties
Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones also suffered a controversial “roughing the passer” call in his club’s Week 5 game against the Las Vegas Raiders. The 28-year-old then brought up the idea after the game that rulings on this very special penalty should be reviewed twice in the future using video evidence.
And Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay also told the Associated Press he would support that decision. There is “too much ambiguity about what can and cannot be reviewed”, the owner said.
It is not yet known how the NFL will react to the reply email from Titans coach Vrabel.
