Tennessee Titans: A.J. Brown speaks openly about his depression

Titans pro A.J. Brown has spoken out about depression in a video on social media. Among other things, he admits to having had suicidal thoughts last year. At a press conference, he emphasised that he wanted to help other people with this.

Munich – In an emotional video on Instagram, A.J. Brown spoke about a week ago that he suffered from depression last year and that he had even thought about taking his own life.

At the press conference before the game against the Houston Texans, the Titans receiver was asked about the said video and stated that he wanted to help other people with his story: “I wanted to send a positive message and show that I’m still here and I’m still growing. There are a lot of things I’m thankful for,” Brown continued.

He had never really known what depression actually was and had always wiped away his feelings without seeking therapy, he said. “Men’s feelings don’t interest that many people most of the time,” he claims. “You should talk about such things and seek help. Take care of your brain like you take care of your body,” Brown continues to appeal.

In the Instagram video – which he has since deleted – the NFL star admitted to having run out of hope for better times last year and contemplating suicide. “I’m telling you this because I’m still here. I’m moving on and I’m still laughing,” he puts on a fighting face.

NFL: Mike Vrabel endorses A.J. Brown

“I didn’t think depression actually existed until I had it myself. Now I know they are very real,” Brown explains.

What exactly was the trigger for his mentally difficult time, Brown did not explain. Instead, he described what a positive impact the birth of his daughter on 28 April 2020 would have had on him. This would help him every single day.

The 24-year-old receives support from his head coach Mike Vrabel. The latter also spoke about the issue at the press conference and stated that he admires Brown for his courage.

“It’s part of our job to make sure guys are able to cope with the difficulties of this life and the strain on their families. When you ask someone how they are doing, you should also take the time to listen to them,” Vrabel also appealed.
