NFL: Travis Hunter to the Cleveland Browns? GM compares his skills to baseball superstar Shohei Ohtani

The Cleveland Browns are considered the top favorite to draft Travis Hunter, who can play both cornerback and wide receiver. A franchise executive is tempting him with a flattering comparison.

Travis Hunter is considered a possible first overall pick in the upcoming draft.

He matured into a superstar at college with the Colorado Buffaloes, impressing both as a cornerback and wide receiver.

The 21-year-old wants to play both positions in the NFL.

Rams star Nacua comments on Brock Purdy’s contract

The 2024 Heisman Trophy winner, the award for the best college player, recently told CBS that he would rather quit football than play only one of the two positions.

“Because I’ve been doing this my whole life, and I love being on the football field. I feel like I can dominate on both sides of the ball, so I really enjoy it,” Hunter explained.

Accordingly, interested teams with top picks in the first round of the draft can already prepare for Hunter’s demands.

One franchise is publicly pushing ahead.

Travis Hunter compared to baseball superstar Shohei Ohtani

The Cleveland Browns, who have the second pick, are offering the rising star the same dual role.

General manager Andrew Berry paid Hunter one of the highest compliments you can give a “dual-threat star” and drew a comparison across sports.

“I think he’s a little bit like […] Ohtani, right?” the 38-year-old was quoted as saying by ‘Pro Football Talk’ at a press conference.

Shohei Ohtani is a superstar for the Los Angeles Dodgers in Major League Baseball (MLB) and is also known for his versatility in multiple positions.

“When he’s a pitcher or a hitter, he’s an outstanding player. You obviously get a unicorn when you use him on both sides,” Berry raved about the four-time All-Star and three-time MVP.

Cleveland Browns lure Hunter with dual role

Berry also cited one of the reasons why he believes Hunter, like Ohtani, can actually master a dual role. “I think one of the things you probably don’t really appreciate until you see Travis play live is just his world-class conditioning,” the GM emphasized.

“If you saw him play in Colorado, he basically never came off the field. It’s incredible because there are more plays in a college game than in a professional game.”

Hunter also cited his conditioning as crucial to his game: ‘To be honest, I think I just have to see if my body allows me to do all that and continue to endure it,’ the youngster is quoted as saying by The Associated Press.

“But I do a lot of treatment so that I’m able to stay in tune with my body and what it needs.”

The top talent could be a first in the NFL: ‘That being said, what he would try to do hasn’t been done in our league yet,’ Berry continued.

According to the franchise executive, the Browns would not limit his abilities to one position: “We would want to be smart about how we use him.”
