The Pittsburgh Steelers will send a new starting quarterback onto the field next season. Head coach Mike Tomlin calls for consistency and reaches into the metaphorical bag of tricks to do so.
Munich – After nearly 20 years with Ben Roethlisberger as the undisputed starter, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is turning the page on a new quarterback chapter. The main protagonists in the coming season are Mitch Trubisky and Kenny Pickett.
Trubisky came from the Buffalo Bills in the offseason, Pickett was selected by the Steelers in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Both are likely to get chances to grab the starter’s job.
For Mike Tomlin, one thing is paramount: consistency. “I want a certain standard. It’s like McDonald’s. No. 1 (on the menu) is always No. 1. No matter where you go, you know what No. 1 is. That’s what I want with the Steelers,” he said during a podcast interview with “The Pivot.”
Trubisky and Pickett: Two first-round picks
Tomlin is looking forward to the new assignment and thinks the Steelers have “some serviceable quarterbacks.” Trubisky, whom the Bears selected second overall in 2017, made a good impression last season with the Bills as a backup and is expected to enter training camp as the starter.
Pickett is considered a solid quarterback who may not have the highest potential due to his physical limitations, but should play at a serviceable level from the start.
And Tomlin can then pick and choose what appeals to him most on the menu. As long as he doesn’t see cheese everywhere, the Steelers should have found their starting quarterback then.
