NFL: Pittsburgh Steelers – Head Coach Mike Tomlin resigns

Shocking news for the Pittsburgh Steelers! Mike Tomlin is stepping down as head coach of the Steelers after 19 seasons.

A real era is coming to an end in Pittsburgh!

Mike Tomlin is stepping down as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers after 19 seasons. The team confirmed this on Tuesday. The Steelers suffered a clear 6-30 defeat to the Houston Texans in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs on Monday night.

After the defeat, there were once again boos and verbal demands for Tomlin to be fired. In addition to a Super Bowl victory, two conference titles, and seven division wins during his tenure, he has managed to avoid a losing season with the Steelers.

However, the truth is that their last playoff victory was in 2016 (!) against the Kansas City Chiefs. Their postseason record: eight wins, but twelve losses and, most recently, a general feeling of weariness.

Pittsburgh Steelers: Warm words from the president

Steelers President Art Rooney II emphasized in a statement that he is “extremely grateful to Tomlin for all the hard work, dedication, and success we have experienced together over the past 19 years.” “It’s hard for me to put into words how much respect and appreciation I have for Coach Tomlin. His record of never having a losing season in 19 years will likely never be repeated.“

Rooney continued: ”My family and I, as well as everyone involved in the Steelers’ leadership, are eternally grateful to Mike Tomlin for the passion and dedication he has devoted to Steelers football.”

Mike Tomlin: Will there be a trade now?

Tomlin’s contract would have been valid for the coming season, including a club option for 2027. Since Tomlin resigned during an ongoing contract, the Steelers retain his coaching rights.

Should he take another job on an NFL sideline before the end of the 2027 season, Pittsburgh could negotiate compensation for that. Either way, the Steelers are now looking for their fourth coach since 1969.
