Justin Fields is the new starter for the New York Jets. Now the 26-year-old is talking for the first time about his new franchise. And a change from an uncomfortable to a comfortable situation.
The new starter for the franchise, who is taking over from Aaron Rodgers, announced this for the first time to the media present.
“I was just thrilled with what the Jets have done here with Coach Aaron Glenn and the coaching staff,” said Fields, pleased with his new employer.
Fields moved from the Pittsburgh Steelers to the Big Apple franchise during the offseason. In Pittsburgh, Fields was allowed to start at the beginning of the season, but after a 4-2 start, he was benched in favor of Russell Wilson.
“It was obviously a different environment for me and a place I didn’t necessarily feel comfortable,” Fields told ESPN about his time with the Steelers.
No blame on the Steelers
However, the quarterback also made it clear that this was not the reason for his move to the Jets. And he did not blame those in charge.
“You can’t take things personally. That’s one thing I’ve learned over the years: not to take anything personally.”
Still, the backup role in Pittsburgh was something Fields had to get used to. The bench position was ‘a place I’ve never been in my entire life.’
And further: “Coach Tomlin made a decision that he thought was best for the team and I will never go against that,” Fields said. “I’m not a selfish guy, so I just tried to change my perspective and get better every day in practice.”
Fields is entering his fifth NFL season as the Jets’ starting quarterback. Prior to his year in Pittsburgh, the 2021 No. 11 pick spent three years as the starting quarterback for the Chicago Bears.
