The Cleveland Browns are apparently seriously considering starting the season with four quarterbacks. The upcoming season could turn into a casting call.
What strategy are the Cleveland Browns pursuing at the quarterback position? That question is not so easy to answer, as the Ohio franchise recently caused some surprise with a number of personnel decisions.
In this year’s NFL draft, the Browns selected Dillon Gabriel in the third round at position 94 and the deeply fallen Shedeur Sanders in the fifth round at position 144.
Kenny Pickett was signed by the Philadelphia Eagles in March, and veteran Joe Flacco was signed in April. With Deshaun Watson out with another Achilles tendon injury, the quartet was expected to battle for two or three spots on the 53-man roster for the upcoming season.
But now everything could turn out very differently, with the Browns potentially entering the season with all four quarterbacks. According to a report by cleveland.com, this is being considered because the four signal callers together only take up $7.6 million of the cap space, which could make sense with a view to the future.
The next few months could turn into a QB casting call
The Browns would then see if Pickett can become their franchise QB in the coming season, or if Dillon or Sanders have what it takes. If not, Flacco would be an experienced playmaker who could lead the Browns through the season.
For the medium term, there would then be two options: Either Watson returns after his Achilles tendon rupture during the season, or the Browns try to find their franchise quarterback in next year’s draft.
The next few weeks and months are likely to be a kind of casting call for the Browns as they search for the quarterback of the future.
Shedeur Sanders in particular is said to have made a strong impression recently. However, it is doubtful whether he will be ready for the NFL from Week 1. It therefore seems entirely possible that the competition for the Browns will continue into the new season.
Going into the season with four quarterbacks would be a highly unusual decision. But the Cleveland Browns have caused quite a stir recently.
