NFL: Leander Wiegand gets jersey number with the New York Jets

About two weeks after signing with the New York Jets, offensive lineman Leander Wiegand has a jersey number.

Shortly after the NFL Draft in late April, the New York Jets announced that they had signed German offensive lineman Leander Wiegand as an undrafted free agent.

Wiegand, who had previously been part of the International Player Pathway Program (IPP), was signed by the Big Apple franchise as part of the program.

Now, around two weeks later, the 25-year-old also has a jersey number. The O-liner will wear number 64 in future, the team announced. The number was previously held by Kohl Levao, who has been with the Jets since June 2024. The guard signed a reserve/future contract with the team in January 2024.

Roster exemption for three Germans

Meanwhile, there was good news for Wiegand and two other German NFL hopefuls. The trio has been granted a roster exemption. This exemption is granted to players under the IPP program so that they do not count against the NFL teams’ 90-man roster during preseason.

The players are thus considered additional athletes on the practice squad.

In addition to Wiegand, kicker Lenny Krieg of the Atlanta Falcons and safety Marcel Dabo of the Indianapolis Colts are also included.
