The Kansas City Chiefs want an annual game at Christmas. The NFL’s response to the request is not positive.
At the beginning of April, “The Athletic” reported that the Kansas City Chiefs have asked NFL officials to make their team a “fixture” for the annual Christmas games. The Chiefs apparently hope to be able to participate in a special game every year, just like the Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving. But apparently nothing will come of it.
In the “It’s Always Gameday in Buffalo” podcast, the NFL’s Vice President of TV Distribution responded to the request – but his answer was not positive.
“From a fan perspective, it’s a lot to ask fans to come to the stadium every Christmas,” he said.
“As long as you’re good, winning the AFC West and competing for the Super Bowl, it’s an easy sell. If Patrick Mahomes retires in five years and they’re no longer division champions and in every AFC Championship Game, I’m not sure we want to be married to a location.”
And further: “For a team like the Chiefs, who volunteer to play on Christmas while they’re busy winning every other Super Bowl and their tight end [Travis Kelce] is dating the world’s biggest pop star [Taylor Swift], the league office would obviously love the Chiefs to play every Christmas,” North elaborated.
“Thanks for the offer. But I’m not sure it will become a tradition like Thanksgiving is. Remember what it took for that tradition to happen: the Lions since the 1930s, the Cowboys since the 60s.”
NFL doesn’t want to commit
In addition to the Lions and Cowboys games, there is now a third game on Thanksgiving, but the league does not want to commit to a team for that either. The same applies to the newly introduced game on Black Friday, for which the New York Jets and the Cincinnati Bengals had already offered themselves as permanent teams, but were rejected by the league.
“Never say never, let’s see what the next few years bring, but I don’t think we’re going to commit to a permanent third host for Thanksgiving, a permanent host for Black Friday, or a permanent host for Christmas.”
All of this does not mean, of course, that the Chiefs will not play on Christmas for the third year in a row next season. After all, Mahomes, Kelce and Swift are still there.
