Bad news for the Chiefs and their wide receiver Rashee Rice, who must spend several weeks in prison.
Shock for the Kansas City Chiefs and their wide receiver Rashee Rice.
According to ESPN, a judge in Dallas County has sentenced Rice to 30 days in jail for his involvement in a multi-car accident in Dallas during the 2024 offseason.
The 25-year-old can serve this sentence within the next five years, which are suspended on probation. Exactly when that will be is not yet clear.
Rice expresses his regret in a statement
Rice has since commented on the verdict through his lawyer, Royce West. Speaking on behalf of his client, West said: “Last March, I was involved in a high-speed accident in Dallas. I have had many sleepless nights thinking about the damage I have caused. I will continue to do everything in my power to ensure that all those affected are compensated.“
In the statement, he also called on people to ”observe the speed limit and drive safely and defensively.” Last but not least, he expressed regret for the damage to people and property and apologized “for the harm I have caused to innocent parties and their families.”
This decision is also likely to have consequences for Rice in the NFL. The league, which had been waiting for the criminal verdict, can now speed up its disciplinary proceedings.
It is expected that Rice will be suspended for several games. NFL insider Adam Schefter suspects that the 2024 Super Bowl winner will have to serve the suspension during the upcoming season.
Rice was involved in an illegal street race that resulted in an accident
In the spring of 2024, Rice was involved in an illegal street race in Dallas, Texas, in his Lamborghini Urus, reaching speeds of over 190 km/h and causing a serious accident involving a total of six vehicles. Two people involved in the accident had to be treated in hospital.
After the incident, Rice fled the scene of the accident. According to a police report, 10.8 grams of marijuana were also found in his Lamborghini. Rice later turned himself in to the authorities and took responsibility for the accident.
Nevertheless, he was eligible to play for the following season, but injured his knee so badly in the fourth week against the Los Angeles Chargers that he was out for the rest of the season.
According to head coach Andy Reid a few weeks ago, Rice could return to training at the end of July.
