The Kansas City Chiefs round out their rookie class with 17 players who were not selected in the draft. Two running backs can hope for a spot on the roster
The draft is over, but the Kansas City Chiefs are still working hard on their roster for the 2024 season.
At the start of their rookie mini-camp, the Super Bowl winners of the last two years signed 17 players who were not selected in the draft.
These players will now have the opportunity to fight for their place in the Chiefs’ squad. In return, the franchise has the chance to find an overlooked talent or fill out the roster with inexpensive, young players.
The two running backs Emani Bailey and Carson Steele should have high hopes. Brett Veach, General Manager of the Chiefs, had already promised them in advance that they had a chance to win the number three running back job behind Isiah Pacheco and Clyde Edwards-Helaire.
So Bailey and Steele will likely compete with two-time Super Bowl winner La’Mical Perine for a roster spot.
Fabien Lovett Sr. was traded as a third-round pick
Linebacker Curtis Jacobs and defensive tackle Fabien Lovett Sr. were even considered third-round picks by some experts and can now also hope to fulfill their NFL dream as undrafted free agents.
On the other side, the Chiefs also released several players, including wide receivers Anthony Miller, Jacob Copeland and Shi Smith, as well as tight end Izaiah Gathings, safety Tyree Gillespie and defensive end Jordan Smith. A contract offer for linebacker Cole Christiansen was withdrawn.
