Chiefs receiver Rashee Rice has confessed to his involvement in a serious traffic accident following a street race. Now he faces tough – and expensive – consequences
Chiefs receiver Rashee Rice is facing severe consequences after his involvement in an illegal street race. According to the Dallas police, he is facing a total of eight charges.
One of them, as has now become known, is demanding a total of 10 million dollars in damages, according to “ESPN”. Another lawsuit is for over one million dollars in actual damages.
There is also a warrant for the wide receiver’s arrest for grievous bodily harm. There is also an arrest warrant for collision with serious bodily injury and six other arrest warrants for collision with bodily injury.
Officials also said Rice and Theodore Knox – the other driver in the crash – were not in custody. However, an arrest warrant will also be issued for Knox.
A few days ago, Rice had already confessed to his participation in the illegal street race that led to a serious traffic accident.
In the meantime, the US media are reporting that Rice has turned himself in to the Dallas Police Department.
It has also been announced that college player Knox has been definitively identified as another driver in the accident and has been suspended from his team as a result.
The former SMU Mustangs player is reportedly facing the same consequences as Rice.
According to police, the two young men were speeding in the left lane on March 31 when they lost control and Rice’s Lamborghini veered onto the shoulder and crashed into a wall. This triggered a chain reaction involving Rice and Knox in a Corvette and four other cars.
Fleeing the scene of the accident
Four people were injured in the accident. According to the police, the two defendants simply drove on after the accident – without checking whether anyone needed medical assistance.
According to TV station “WFAA-TV,” the police report also states that marijuana, credit cards, a check for $16,500, a diamond necklace and a Chiefs playbook were found in the two cars. In Rice’s car, the police said they found a prohibited amount – over ten grams – of marijuana.
According to a local exotic car rental company, the Lamborghini is a leased car belonging to the Super Bowl winner, while the Corvette belongs to Rice, his lawyer has already said.
Last week, the pass recipient posted on his Instagram story that he wanted to take “full responsibility”. It is not known whether he was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the accident
What suspensions does Rice face?
Aggravated assault, a second-degree felony, is punishable by up to 20 years in prison in Texas. A collision resulting in serious bodily injury is punishable by up to ten years in prison, and a collision resulting in bodily injury is punishable by five years.
Regardless of the outcome of the legal consequences, Rice can expect to be fined by the NFL. The league is permitted to fine players and/or suspend them for games as a disciplinary measure.
The NFL determines the level of punishment itself, in Rice’s case a suspension of several games is currently not considered unlikely.
