NFL: Jacksonville Jaguars sign Kilian Zierer after San Francisco 49ers release him

After the San Francisco 49ers parted ways with offensive lineman Kilian Zierer, the 25-year-old has now signed a contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars. This makes him part of the practice squad.

Kilian Zierer and all German NFL fans can breathe a sigh of relief!

The week started with bad news for the German: the San Francisco 49ers had released the offensive lineman. Instead of the 25-year-old, the franchise signed Mexican Isaac Alarcon, who takes Zierer’s international spot and therefore does not count against the maximum number of players on the practice squad.

This meant that Zierer was officially a free agent for a few days and faced an uncertain future. But it seems that this feeling did not last long. In an official press release, the Jacksonville Jaguars announced the signing of Zierer.

As a member of the NFL’s International Player Pathway (IPP) Program, the German will be able to take a spot on the Jaguars’ practice squad and prove his skills. This gives the Munich native another chance to earn a spot on an NFL roster.

NFL: Already a wild season for Kilian Zierer

This season, the 25-year-old was already part of the Atlanta Falcons and Cleveland Browns before signing with the San Francisco 49ers at the end of August. In 2023 and 2024, he was on the Houston Texans’ practice squad.

Back in September, Zierer spoke to ran about his place on the practice squad. Even then, he had a realistic view of the business side of the league: “Nothing is certain in the NFL.” Now he has a new opportunity with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
