NFL: Jacksonville Jaguars reach agreement on stadium mega-project

The EverBank Stadium of the Jacksonville Jaguars no longer shines in its newest splendor and is in need of renovation. Now the Jaguars and the city of Jacksonville have reached an agreement on their mega project “Stadium of the Future”.

Built almost 29 years ago, EverBank Stadium is no longer one of the absolute eye-catchers in the NFL. However, this is likely to change in the near future.

The city of Jacksonville and the Jaguars have now officially reached an agreement on a 1.4 billion renovation project.

Jacksonville’s city council voted 14-1 in favor of the renovation. However, it will still need 24 of 32 votes when the NFL owners meet in October. Only then would the final approval for the new building be finalized, which can be assumed.

According to the report, the plan envisages both sides contributing 625 million euros to the project. In addition, the city of Jacksonville would have to raise a further 150 million dollars to prepare the new EverBank Stadium for the extensive renovation. A completely new building would have cost the parties involved around a billion more.

The renovations include a roof that will be attached to the existing stadium. The project is scheduled for completion in 2028.

New venue secures Jaguars future in Jacksonville

This also clarifies the future of the franchise. For a long time, there were rumors that the team would relocate. Now it’s clear: the Jaguars are staying in Jacksonville.

Construction is set to begin after the 2025 season, which means the Jaguars would have to cope with a reduced stadium capacity in the 2026 season. In 2027, a complete relocation to another venue would even be necessary. Gainesville and Orlando are said to be under discussion as replacement venues for home games

However, the cost and effort should be worth it when you see how futuristic the new arena is set to be. The Jaguars want to make the arena four times as ready as the current stadium and integrate interactive areas and dining venues.

In addition, the venue will be equipped with state-of-the-art technology and heat retention will be reduced by 70 percent. All seats are to be in the shade, which is of course an advantage given the hot temperatures in Florida. The arena will have space for 62,000 to 71,500 spectators, which would reduce the capacity slightly.

The new arena is planned as the heart of a new 125,000 square meter sports center. It will include an indoor training pitch, two large grass training pitches, training and recreation areas and a weight room.

Meanwhile, there are also plans to host a Super Bowl in Jacksonville again after 2005.
