NFL: Indianapolis Colts open on quarterback issue – owner confirms meeting with Andrew Luck

The role of Jacoby Brissett as starting quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts is obviously anything but set in stone. This was hinted at by team owner Jim Irsay. He also confirmed a meeting with former franchise quarterback Andrew Luck.

Less than a month before the Free Agency’s launch (March 18th), the Indianapolis Colts are still not sure if they will start the season again with quarterback Jacoby Brissett as their starter. As team owner Jim Irsay announced at a press conference on Sunday, this question is still unanswered for the Colts.

“All options are open and on the table,” says the 60-year-old. “I have never experienced such an unusual off-season. General Manager Chris Ballard, Head Coach Frank Reich and I have talked it over and we are open to everything. There are many possible outcomes, but for now, Jacoby Brissett is our starter.”

About the quarterback, who scored 18 touchdowns on six interceptions last year, Irsay also said that he is still an up-and-coming signal caller who needs more development time. Among other things, he compared the Colts’ weak 7-9 season with the early years of Peyton Manning. Manning also started his career with negative season results.

“Jacoby finishes the season 7-9 and all of a sudden, the world goes under. We had many injuries, the special teams were not at the highest level and on top of that Jacoby played his first year as a starter. There are a lot of things to overcome, so 7-9 is really not bad.”

Irsay confirms: Colts officials in conversation with Andrew Luck
However, Brissett had to be compared to a certain Andrew Luck throughout the season. The long-time franchise quarterback, who could still lead the Colts to the playoffs in 2018, had surprisingly resigned shortly before the season and left Brissett his team. Or better: he left Brissett to his team.

Irsay could not or would not say anything about a resignation, but he confirmed ongoing talks with the only 30-year-old. General Manager Ballard and Head Coach Reich are said to have recently met Luck for dinner. The door for a Luck comeback is still open for the 2018 Comeback Player of the Year.

So the Colts options are now:

– Going back into the season with Brissett as our starter.
– To strike during the Free Agency and get one of the numerous non-contracted quarterbacks.
– Use the 13th pick in the draft for a quarterback, or
– to continue to hope for an unlikely comeback of Andrew Luck.

Which option will be chosen in Indy will probably not be foreseeable until the start of the Free Agency on March 18.
