The Miami Dolphins, led by head coach Mike McDaniel and star quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, are expecting what is likely to be a trend-setting season. The latter should show his critics

The new mega-contract has been signed and the pressure is probably higher than ever: the Miami Dolphins’ hopes are pinned on quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

According to Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel, his protégé is aware of the expectations: “As a quarterback in the NFL, you’re in the spotlight. The expectations are high, but Tua is very, very aware of that,” he told the Palm Beach Post.

Dolphins want to hang in there this time

Although Tagovailoa has blossomed since McDaniel took over and signed wide receiver Tyreek Hill, the past two seasons have ended in disappointment. Miami’s slump in form in 2022 could be explained by the quarterback’s absence for several weeks – he was repeatedly criticized for his susceptibility to injury.

McDaniel wants to achieve better results in the coming season. His job security also depends on it. “You have to wait and be successful. I knew that from day one when I got the job,” explained the 41-year-old.

“No celebration” due to extension

Tagovailoa is likely to play a major role in this. The left-hander stayed fit in 2023 and impressed with 4,624 yards, 29 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

Nevertheless, head coach McDaniel did not want to overrate the extension, at least not publicly: “It’s maybe a handshake and a smile”. It is not a celebration. At the same time, McDaniel emphasized that he had expected an agreement to be reached on the extension.
