NFL: Denver Broncos sign running back J.K. Dobbins

J.K. Dobbins was recently without a team, but now the NFL pro has found a new sporting home. The 26-year-old has signed a one-year contract with the Denver Broncos.

The running game was a major weakness for the Denver Broncos last season, and the franchise also lost its number one rusher, Javonte Williams, in free agency. So there was a need for action.

Denver selected RJ Harvey in the second round of the draft, but now the front office has gone one better. According to NFL insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, J.K. Dobbins has signed a one-year contract with the Colorado team. This will earn the 26-year-old a maximum of $5.25 million.

Dobbins played for the Los Angeles Chargers last season and made a strong comeback after years of injury problems. With 905 rushing yards and 152 receiving yards, he set career highs in both categories and broke the 1,000 scrimmage yard mark for the first time. He also ran for nine touchdowns.

As a reward, Dobbins was selected as one of the finalists for Comeback Player of the Year. However, after his contract expired, the Chargers opted for Najee Harris, who came from the Pittsburgh Steelers. Dobbins was left out.

J.K. Dobbins: Open backfield in Denver

In Denver, under head coach Sean Payton, Dobbins could quickly play a key role again in an open backfield. In addition to Dobbins and rookie Harvey, Audric Estime, Jaleel McLaughlin, Tyler Badie, and Blake Watson are also under contract and will likely fill the remaining roster spots.

Dobbins was drafted in the second round by the Baltimore Ravens in 2020. After a promising rookie season, he was plagued by injuries in the following years.

In 2021, he tore his cruciate ligament in the last preseason game and missed the entire season. A year later, a knee injury cost him half the season, and in 2023, he tore his Achilles tendon at the start of the season. After his rookie contract expired, he signed with the Chargers for the 2024 season.
