The Cleveland Browns have five quarterbacks, including two rookies. It appears that Shedeur Sanders currently has the short end of the stick compared to his competitor.
It does not take an NFL expert to know that the quarterback situation at the Cleveland Browns is tense.
With Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Deshaun Watson, Dillon Gabriel, and Shedeur Sanders under contract, it is extremely unlikely that the franchise will go into the season like this.
This means that the current training sessions and camps will decide who gets to stay and who has to go. Special attention is being paid to the two rookies. And it seems that Gabriel has the edge over Sanders.
Cleveland Browns: Sanders behind, Gabriel preferred
There are clips showing both Sanders and Gabriel making good plays. But the Browns’ training schedule gives an indication of how the two are currently being assessed. Insiders also suspect that only one of them will make the roster cut.
Gabriel is often seen with Pickett and Flacco, allowed to run drills with them. Or at least go through the same routines. Usually with the most renowned players on the roster. Meanwhile, Sanders tends to work with the Browns’ second and third string.
Browns reporter Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com reports: “They’re using Gabriel and Pickett to test the new schemes. They’ve come up with something new in the playbook, but they don’t want to try it out with Sanders yet. Right now, it looks like they see Pickett and Gabriel as the starters and first backups.”
Since this season, Tommy Rees has been the new offensive coordinator on head coach Kevin Stefanski’s coaching staff. Stefanski seems to think Pickett and Gabriel are best suited to his game plan based on their skill sets. However, it is also reported that Sanders is delivering the “most impressive throws” and repeatedly showing that he would have been worth a first- or second-round pick.
Nevertheless, the Browns are not considering him – yet.
