In the Sunday Night Game of the second NFL game day, number 1 pick Caleb Williams concedes his first defeat, while the opponents from Houston make life difficult for themselves.
This is probably not how Caleb Williams imagined his first away game in week two of the NFL! The No. 1 pick from last year’s draft lost the Sunday Night Game with the Chicago Bears at the Houston Texans by 13-19, with the result being closer than the actual course of the game.
Williams completed 23 of 37 passes for a meager 174 yards. He threw two interceptions and conceded seven sacks – just like in the opening game against the Titans, he failed to score a touchdown.
The points for the Bears were scored by Khalil Herbert with a two-yard rushing touchdown and kicker Cairo Santos with two field goals.
Meanwhile, the hosts made life difficult for themselves – and were also heavily reliant on the skills of their kicker. Ka’imi Fairbairn sank four field goals from an impressive 56, 47, 59 and 53 yards. The team’s only touchdown was a 28-yard pass from C. J. Stroud to Nico Collins.
The fact that the result was relatively close in the end was also due to Cam Akers. The Texans’ backup running back, who stood in for Joe Mixon who was injured after a hip drop tackle, caused a fumble on first-and-goal at the four-yard line with around six-and-a-half minutes remaining.
Many penalties set Texans back
Also problematic for the Texans: twelve penalties for 115 yards and the weak punter Tommy Townsend on this evening threw the franchise back again and again.
Quarterback Stroud completed 23 of 36 passes for 260 yards and a touchdown, while Nico Collins was the best receiver with 135 yards.
The Texans now have two wins, while the Bears have a 1-1 record after their success in the opener.
