NFL: Chandler Jones avoids jail time

Let’s breathe a sigh of relief for Chandler Jones. The former Las Vegas Raiders defensive end apparently avoids jail time

Chandler Jones is apparently just avoiding jail time. The 34-year-old was sentenced to 90 days in jail following a domestic violence charge last fall, though the sentence was suspended.

According to Nevada court records, Jones reached an agreement with Clark County prosecutors on June 17 – agreeing to plead no contest to a misdemeanor domestic violence charge. In exchange, another domestic violence charge he was facing was dropped.

This means that Jones will not have to go to jail as long as he fulfills the court’s conditions. If the longtime NFL pro does not commit any offenses in the next six months and, most importantly, complies with the no-contact order with the victim, the charges against him will be dropped.

Jones arrested and fired

Jones was arrested for domestic violence in Las Vegas in September and charged with one count of violating a domestic violence restraining order. A month later, there was another arrest because the defensive end again violated the protective order.

The Raiders had already released Jones in September after his first arrest. At the time, he was in the second year of a three-year, $51 million contract.

However, the scandal-plagued pro had not been a part of the team for some time and eventually attracted unpleasant attention on social media, where he took violent shots at the team, ownership, general manager Dave Ziegler and coach Josh McDaniels. The Raiders had placed him on the injured/sick list on Sept. 20.

Prior to his “fall,” Jones was voted first-team All-Pro twice, among other honors, and totaled112 sacks in 11 seasons.
