NFL – Baltimore Ravens: New start under rookie coach – How Lamar Jackson should finally reach the Super Bowl

The Baltimore Ravens are starting a new chapter after the end of the era of head coach John Harbaugh. After a disappointing season, the aim is to finally reach the Super Bowl under the leadership of Jesse Minter.

A new era is beginning for the Baltimore Ravens.

After missing the playoffs in the previous season, the franchise parted ways with head coach John Harbaugh after a total of 18 seasons. His successor is Jesse Minter, who previously worked as defensive coordinator with the Los Angeles Chargers.

As one of ten NFL teams with a new head coach, the Ravens began their voluntary offseason program this week.

Many star players, including star quarterback Lamar Jackson, running back Derrick Henry and rookie defensive end Trey Hendrickson, appeared at Monday morning’s kickoff.

Under Minter, the big play should finally come and Jackson should be able to fulfill his Super Bowl dream.

Baltimore Ravens: Lamar Jackson’s presence at voluntary offseason program telling

After a disappointing last season, when they missed out on winning the AFC North on the final day of the regular season in a clash with the Pittsburgh Steelers and thus also the postseason, there is now a paradigm shift in Baltimore.

In addition to Minter, a new offensive coordinator, Declan Doyle, is also on board. The 30-year-old previously held the same position with the Chicago Bears.

The fact that quarterback Jackson is already involved at the start of the offseason programs speaks volumes – after all, the two-time MVP had largely suspended the OTAs (Organized Team Activities) starting next month in the preseason and thus waived a bonus of 750,000 dollars.

This fact does not escape the experts. “Lamar Jackson showing up on the first day for the new head coach when he’s almost never seen in the training center at this point – working hard, being on social media, doing his cool slow-motion walk – that feels significant,” NFL insider Ian Rapoport pointed out.

And further: “It seems like the quarterback is at least ostensibly on board with the new head coach’s and organization’s ideas, and that’s a very good sign for the players in the locker room. It just looks like Lamar Jackson likes what he’s heard,” Rapoport explained.

Baltimore Ravens: Lamar Jackson to be better featured again

After a 1-5 start to the season, the team was quickly brought down to earth last season. While both the defense and offense fell short of expectations, Jackson also suffered from bad luck. Due to numerous injuries, the playmaker was only able to play in 13 games.

With a healthy Jackson, the team is now set to attack again. The fact that his new OC Doyle – the youngest coordinator in the league – is only a few months older than the quarterback could even benefit the franchise.

Jackson didn’t really have a good relationship with his predecessor Todd Monken. The new head coach of the Cleveland Browns confirmed this on “The Ryan Ripken Show” in January: “I didn’t coach Lamar well enough. I didn’t have as good a relationship with him as I could have. I didn’t do what we needed to do this year to win enough games to give us a chance. I’m convinced of that.”

This should be very different under Doyle. His very good relationship with Bears quarterback Caleb Williams last season is a promising sign. In his second NFL season, Williams put up strong numbers with 3942 passing yards and 27 touchdowns with only seven interceptions.

Jackson should also shine as a pocket passer

His previous points of contact with Jackson have already left a lasting impression on the young coach: “His willingness to listen, his thirst for knowledge, his desire to develop. He is someone with a development mindset. He’s played at a really high level and yet I think he wants to keep working at it and feels he can still improve. Myself and the rest of the coaching staff are really looking forward to working with him on that goal,” Doyle enthused.

The focus will not only be on Jackson’s strengths in the run game, but also on improving the passing game, which has taken a back seat of late. The Ravens ranked last in pass attempts last season. Although one could argue that Jackson’s injury played a major role in this, the franchise already ranked second-to-last in pass attempts the season before.

The new offensive system is also intended to better accommodate Jackson’s skills as a pocket passer and take his game to a new level: “We’re looking for spectacular plays,” the new Ravens OC said in February, making fans’ hearts beat faster. Baltimore Ravens: Jesse Minter wants to build the next top defense

And there is also a need for action on the other side of the pitch. The pass rush lacked punch last season and the unit was one of the worst in the league. With just 30 sacks, the defense recorded its worst value since 2010.

A major weakness, but one that new head coach Minter can address directly. Despite his lack of experience as a head coach, he has impressively demonstrated several times in the recent past that he has what it takes to form a feared defense. Before building the dominant Chargers defense, Minter also led the University of Michigan to the 2023 National Championship as DC, when the Wolverines had the strongest defense in the country with a 15-0 record.

After the trade for defensive star Maxx Crosby from the Las Vegas Raiders fell through, the franchise reacted quickly and snapped up the best pass rusher on the market in Hendrickson. According to “NFL.com”, the franchise actually wanted to completely reorganize the hunt for the opposing quarterback with both players as the new dominant rusher duo.

However, another prominent name may now be coming instead of Crosby. The Ravens could be looking to make a deal for defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, who recently requested a trade from the New York Giants.
