NFL: Are the Kansas City Chiefs moving? The state of Kansas extends an important deadline on the stadium issue

Will the Kansas City Chiefs stay in Missouri or follow the call of Kansas? The latter state has now accommodated the Chiefs on an important issue.

The Kansas City Chiefs face what is probably the most important decision in the franchise’s recent history in the coming months: Will the Chiefs stay in Missouri or move a few miles further towards Kansas?

The state of Kansas had already submitted an offer including a new stadium and financing some time ago, but with a decision deadline of June 30, 2025. The Chiefs requested an extension of the deadline – and have now been granted it.

On Monday, the Kansas Legislative Coordinating Council (LCC) decided to extend the deadline by a whole year to June 30, 2026. This gives the Chiefs important time to make their decision.

Both states are competing to be the home of the Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals MLB team in the coming decades. Both franchises want new stadiums and as much financial support from the state as possible.

In the case of the Chiefs, the choice is between staying in a renovated Arrowhead Stadium or moving to a completely new, fully covered stadium that would also be a potential venue for the Super Bowl.

NFL: Chiefs president impressed by plans in Kansas

President Mark Donovan expressed his enthusiasm for the plans in a letter to the Kansas government asking for a delay in the decision.

“We believe the foundation has been laid for something truly historic — not just for our team, but for the future of the state’s economy and national profile,” Donovan wrote.

He went on to say: “Together, we have the opportunity to bring the National Football League to Kansas, anchored by a world-class domed stadium, a new team headquarters, a state-of-the-art practice facility, and a vibrant, mixed-use entertainment district.”

The city of Kansas City, Missouri, where the Chiefs and Royals are currently based, has a population of about half a million. Kansas City, Kansas, on the other hand, is significantly smaller with a population of around 150,000. Together, however, they form the Kansas City metropolitan area, which has a population of more than two million.
