The back-and-forth over the injury status of superstar quarterback Lamar Jackson is costing the Baltimore Ravens dearly.
The Baltimore Ravens have been fined $100,000 after the NFL sanctioned the club for its handling of quarterback Lamar Jackson’s injury status.
The team initially reported Jackson as fully fit ahead of their Week 8 game, before retracting that statement and removing him from the roster at short notice for the game against the Chicago Bears.
The fine comes in the context of increased measures by the league after two nationwide charges were brought this week against NBA players and coaches for illegal betting. The NFL therefore reminded all teams and employees of the strict compliance with regulations in a memo.
The Ravens’ contradictory communication caused particular surprise: last Friday, the club changed Jackson’s training status from “full” to “limited” before finally removing him from the roster for the game against Chicago – a move that was already considered irregular and punishable in advance.
Baltimore Ravens have no problems in Jackson comeback against Miami
The status change came after Jackson had only participated in training on a limited basis on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday – yet he was incorrectly classified as fully fit, even though he was only used in the scout team’s training.
Ravens officials hoped that Lamar Jackson’s full practice on Friday would increase his chances of playing in Sunday’s important game against the Chicago Bears.
Baltimore ultimately defeated Chicago even without Jackson, who returned to the team last Thursday and threw four touchdown passes in the Ravens’ 28-6 victory over the Miami Dolphins.
