NFL: After Aaron Rodgers – Cameron Heyward, the Pittsburgh Steelers also count

Cameron Heyward has seen enough: the 35-year-old finally wants to win the title. He says so quite openly.

The Steelers star had already made his opinion clear in the wake of the Aaron Rodgers rumors (“Either you want to be a Pittsburgh Steeler or you don’t”).

Now the defensive end has also more or less made a statement to the NFL club.

“I think we’re in a state of urgency,” Heyward said on the Rich Eisen Show. ”We have a lot of guys on the team, like me, who are in the later stages of their careers. We all want to win. It’s no longer enough to just win a playoff game – which we haven’t done in a few years – and that leaves a bitter taste.”

The Steelers have made the playoffs in four of the past five seasons, but have not won a single game during that time. The last time they did so was in the 2016 season.

It doesn’t help that there has never been a negative record under coach Mike Tomlin.

Heyward: “Make the most of this opportunity”

When asked what exactly he meant by urgency, Heyward pointed to his teammates.

“Urgency to make it before several of us end our careers,” Heyward explained. ”You have a player like T.J. Watt. You don’t get players like that often – and when you do, you can’t just have them, you have to do everything you can to take this chance to win at the highest level. The same goes for Minkah Fitzpatrick – All-Pro player, future Hall of Famer,“ Heyward said.

His demand: You have to win now: ‘It’s not enough to look to the future and say, ’In two or three years we could be really good.’ In two or three years, we could be a completely different team. That’s why we have to make the most of this opportunity now.”

Pittsburgh Steelers: Does Aaron Rodgers end the quarterback question?

The Steelers have not been idle in free agency, signing wide receiver D.K. Metcalf, for example. Without question, a new quarterback is also part of the opportunity Heyward mentioned, because the Steelers currently only have Skylar Thompson and Mason Rudolph on the roster.

On Friday, however, Rodgers was with the Steelers, and the signs of an engagement are becoming more and more apparent. Heyward was also asked about Rodgers and his criticism of the superstar.

“It’s funny. Everyone criticized me for it,” he said. “They said I attacked him publicly. But I don’t think I really criticized him. I don’t know why everyone thought, ‘Oh, Cam’s really attacking him now.’ Some fans thought it was great and said, ‘Yeah, that’s right!’ Others said, ‘Oh man, you’re just chasing him away.’ But I’m not chasing anyone away. I just want to win games and play good football.”
