Aaron Rodgers takes over as quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers after a long period of uncertainty. The arrival of the veteran will bring about some changes in the team, as the franchise’s wide receiver coach emphasizes.
The arrival of Aaron Rodgers marks the beginning of a new era for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Even though the star quarterback has already indicated that the 2025 season will most likely be his last in the NFL.
Should the 41-year-old prove to be just a “one-hit wonder” for the Steelers, a paradigm shift has nevertheless been ushered in in Pittsburgh. The pass receivers in particular will have to make some adjustments in the future to adapt to the needs and idiosyncrasies of the new playmaker.
However, Zach Azzanni, the franchise’s wide receiver coach, welcomes the fact that Rodgers sets high standards for his target players.
“I love this challenge,” Azzanni is quoted as saying by ESPN. “I like that. I prefer to have someone who knows the details of the environment, and these guys have to be on the same page. I understand that he’s tough on the receivers, and I like that because I’m tough on them too.”
Aaron Rodgers has high expectations for his receivers
Azzanni already has some experience with the Steelers’ new signal caller.
He was the receivers coach for the New York Jets during Rodgers’ first season there. Although the quarterback was only able to complete four snaps due to a torn Achilles tendon, Azzanni had the opportunity to observe Rodgers’ style during the offseason program and training camp in 2023.
Meanwhile, former teammates can tell you a thing or two about how much fun it can be when the three-time MVP isn’t happy with them.
Last season, Rodgers publicly berated former Jets receiver Mike Williams for running a poor route on a play that led to a game-changing interception against the Buffalo Bills.
Williams ended up finishing the preseason in Pittsburgh. So the Steelers’ receiving corps for the 2024 season, which includes Calvin Austin III, Scotty Miller, Ben Skowronek and Roman Wilson, has already heard quite a bit about the special side of the new boss under center.
With Rodgers having made only one brief appearance in the team’s offseason program so far, the pressure will increase with every practice he takes on the field.
