NFL – Aaron Rodgers as quarterback for the New York Jets: new head coach doesn’t want to commit yet

The new head coach of the New York Jets does not (yet?) want to commit to Aaron Rodgers as the starting quarterback of the franchise.

The New York Jets have a new head coach in Aaron Glenn and a new general manager in Darren Mougey – but do they also have their old quarterback in Aaron Rodgers? Maybe.

In a press conference on Monday, the new Jets coach spoke with several media representatives. It became clear that no player is more important to him than the team.

When specifically asked about Aaron Rodgers, Glenn did not want to make a statement yet: “We’re still in the evaluation phase, so I’ll give the same answer to anyone who asks this question. So don’t waste your time.”

For the 52-year-old, it’s less about Rodgers and more about getting to know the team first.

“This isn’t about Aaron Rodgers, folks. This is about the roster,” Glenn said at the press conference. “We want to put together the best roster we can. Whatever that may be – guard, tackle, defensive tackle – that’s what we’re evaluating.”

Jets owner Woody Johnson, meanwhile, does not want to interfere in the Rodgers situation. He leaves the decision to general manager Mougey and coach Glenn.

“Aaron is talented, without question. He’s a Hall of Famer… I’m not going to express my opinion. It’s up to them,” said Johnson, who had interfered with personnel matters multiple times last season and whose relationship with Rodgers is considered strained.

Rodgers an expensive prospect

Rodgers, who joined the Jets from the Green Bay Packers in 2023, missed almost the entire 2023 season due to a torn Achilles tendon on the first day of the season. Last year, the 41-year-old played in all 17 regular season games, throwing for 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, and finishing the season with a poor 5-12 record.

His contract in New York still applies for the coming season, but without guaranteed salary payments should the Jets decide to go their separate ways.

According to ESPN, Rodgers has a base salary of $2.5 million for the upcoming season, an option bonus of $35 million (due at the start of the season) and is expected to hit the salary cap with $23.5 million.
