New York Jets: Aaron Rodgers officially back on the roster

Aaron Rodgers is back – at least on paper. However, he is unlikely to play again this season.

Just over three months after tearing his Achilles tendon, Aaron Rodgers is officially back with the New York Jets. As the team announced on Wednesday, the star quarterback has been activated from the injured reserve list.

This means that the 40-year-old is once again part of the 53-man squad and could theoretically play against the Washington Commanders next weekend. But that will not happen.

As head coach Robert Saleh explained, Rodgers will not get any more playing time this season. Instead, he will only train with the team as normal.

“It’s all part of his rehab, and it’s a win for everybody when he gets back on the football field,” said Saleh: “It’s a win for him. It’s a win for his teammates. And that’s why we’re going to keep him training.”

The Jets no longer have any chance of a play-off place after the clear 30-0 defeat at the Miami Dolphins the previous week. The risk of using Rodgers would therefore have no added value in sporting terms

Rodgers suffered the injury on September 11 after just a few minutes in the opener against the Buffalo Bills. With his return, the Jets now have four quarterbacks on the 53-man roster. In addition to the four-time MVP, that includes Zach Wilson, Trevor Siemian and Brett Rypien.

It is not yet clear who will lead the offense against the Commanders. Wilson is still in the Concussion Protocol, but is not yet ruled out
