After another below-average performance from Zach Wilson, the New York Jets have benched the 24-year-old. As Aaron Rodgers revealed in an interview, he feels guilty about it.
After the 6:32 defeat against the Buffalo Bills, in which quarterback Zach Wilson only recorded 81 passing yards and was benched, Jets head coach Robert Saleh announced Tim Boyle as the Jets’ new starting quarterback.
Now Aaron Rodgers commented on the situation surrounding the demoted Wilson: “I feel for Zach. I love Zach. Zach is a great kid, and I think he still has a bright future in the league. Often in situations like this, there are certain people who have to be made the scapegoat,” said the four-time MVP on the “Pat McAfee Show”.
He also felt a sense of shared responsibility for the 24-year-old: “It was supposed to be my show, and Zach was supposed to be able to learn and watch it first-hand without the pressure of going out there and playing. So of course it’s disappointing. I feel kind of guilty about the whole thing.”
Wilson, who had already lost his job as starter last season, had to fill in for Rodgers in Week 1 after the former Packers star tore his Achilles tendon after just a few snaps.
The Jets offense struggled mightily under Wilson – the unit posted just 15 points and 270 yards per game, ranking 30th in the NFL.
The former first-round pick’s individual stats are also devastating: less than 200 passing yards per game, a 59.2% completion percentage, and six touchdowns to seven interceptions.
Zach Wilson: Not even a backup anymore
Wilson not only lost his spot as starter, he was demoted to the No. 3 spot behind starter Tim Boyle and backup Trevor Siemian.
“I’m disappointed and sad about it, but it is what it is,” Rodgers commented on the quarterback change. “We’re all going to support Tim and move on, but we’re also going to give Zach a big hug because he’s a great kid and it’s not all his fault. That’s the way it is sometimes.”
After their third loss in a row, the New York Jets’ playoff chances have dropped drastically. Rodgers had previously announced that he was aiming for a comeback in mid-December – but only if the Jets are still in the race for the postseason.
But the 39-year-old is confident: “The season is definitely not over yet. I’m doing well. There’s still a lot to play for. I’m pleased with how far I’ve come with my rehab. It’s going as fast as I thought it would. “
