NFL star Myles Garrett has joined the NBA as a co-owner: The pass rusher has purchased a stake in the Cleveland Cavaliers, the basketball franchise announced.
Myles Garrett is the next in a line of sports stars to join the sports business as a co-owner. The Cleveland Cavaliers announced that the 27-year-old has purchased a minority stake in the NBA team and will also serve as a brand ambassador for the Cavs.
“As a leader on and off the court, Myles has become a Cleveland icon,” Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert wrote in a statement. “We are honored to welcome this longtime friend of the team as our new partner and investor.”
“Myles’ passion and commitment to the city he loves will allow us to reach out to new communities and continue to build on the successful future of this franchise,” Gilbert announced.
Browns star Garrett expressed enthusiasm about joining the Cavaliers, saying, “Having the opportunity to join this impressive and purposeful franchise under Dan’s leadership is truly a dream come true.”
The NFL star’s affinity for the NBA is not new: His half-brother Sean Williams played in the NBA from 2007 to 2012 and Garrett himself participated in the 2022 NBA All-Star Celebrity Game.
The pass rusher was drafted by the Cleveland Browns with the 1st pick in 2017. Since then, Garrett collected 82 sacks (as of October 26, 2023), the most for a player before his 28th birthday since sack stats have been officially recorded.
He has also been named to the Pro Bowl four times, the First All-Pro Team twice and the Second All-Pro Team twice.
