Minnesota Vikings in tank mode? Kirk Cousins should not agree to a trade

The Minnesota Vikings are currently miles away from a playoff spot. Now star receiver Jefferson is out as well. Is that why the team is trading away Cousins?

It’s been a disappointing start to the season for the Minnesota Vikings so far! One win after five games and that against the only winless team in the entire league.

Not a start to the new year that the reigning NFC North champions would have wanted!

And when you don’t have luck, you also have bad luck: Star receiver Justin Jefferson injured his thigh. The Vikings will probably put him on the IR list. That means he’ll be out at least four games.

Little wonder then that voices are being raised in the US to trade quarterback Kirk Cousins!

The 35-year-old’s contract expires after the current season. Even if the Vikings’ record doesn’t show it, Cousins is playing a strong season so far.

Cousins with strong numbers

No other quarterback has more touchdown passes than Cousins (13) and only Tua Tagovailoa (Miami Dolphins) has more passing yards than “Captain Kirk”.

So the Vikings could decide to call it a season, trade the 35-year-old Cousins (and other stars like Danielle Hunter or Jordan Hicks) for good picks and rebuild the team in the coming years.

Also with an eye on college quarterback Caleb Williams, who is considered a sure number one pick in the upcoming draft.

Certainly worth considering for the Vikings! But Kirk Cousins should definitely not agree to a trade!

And he has it in his own hands! The signal caller has a “no trade” clause in his contract. So he would have to approve a change himself. And why would he do that?

Trade deadline approaching

In Minnesota, Cousins and his family have been anchored for five years now. A move to another team where he would have to learn a completely new playbook within the season makes little sense to him. Especially since franchises currently looking for a quarterback are rather scarce – and as far away from the playoffs as Minnesota!

And: After the season, as a free agent, he can more or less decide for himself which franchise he wants to play for!

In just under three weeks, the NFL trade window closes. In the worst case, the Vikings are then 1-7 – at best 4-4 with a chance of making the playoffs.
