Payday for Derwin James: The safety has signed a new four-year contract with the Los Angeles Chargers, breaking several records at the same time.
Munich – Derwin James is cleaning up! The 26-year-old is now the NFL’s highest-paid safety. He signed a new contract with the Los Angeles Chargers on Wednesday.
And the new contract is a good one: According to media reports, the four-year extension pays James a total of 76.532 million dollars, or an average of around 19.1 million dollars per season.
42 million dollars guaranteed
In his first year, he will collect $29 million, which is a new record. He also sets a new record with the guaranteed money, as a total of $42 million from the contract is guaranteed to the safety.
James also ends his “hold in” with the agreement, so he will return to Chargers practice immediately. James was facing the fifth year of his rookie contract in 2022 and would have collected $9 million.
